How to Write a Cheque Correctly in India

Writing a cheque incorrectly is the most common reason for payment delays and cheque bouncing. In India, the Negotiable Instruments Act strictly governs how monetary values must be represented on bank drafts.

Golden Rules for Cheque Formatting

  • The "Only" Rule: Always append the word "Only" at the end of the written amount (e.g., Fifty Thousand Only). This prevents anyone from adding extra words like "and Five Hundred".
  • The Slash Rule: After writing the numerical figures in the box, immediately add "/-" (e.g., 50,000/-) to prevent extra zeros from being added.
  • Date Validity: Use the standard DD/MM/YYYY format. Remember that in India, a cheque is only valid for exactly 3 months from the date written on it.
  • No Overwriting: Any scribbling, crossing out, or use of whiteout will render the cheque invalid immediately. If you make a mistake, tear it up and start a new one.

Use the converter tool at the top of this page to instantly generate the exact text you need to copy onto your cheque book. It is designed to format values exactly as required by major Indian banks like SBI, HDFC, ICICI, and Axis Bank.
